Optimmune® ophthalmic ointment

Product contains:

0.2% Cyclosporine

Product indications:

Optimmune® Ophthalmic Ointment is indicated for managing chronic keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS, or dry eye) and chronic superficial keratitis (CSK, or pannus) in dogs.

Dosage and administration:

Prior to application of Optimmune, debris should be removed from the eye with a suitable nonirritating solution. A one-quarter-inch strip of ointment should be applied to the affected eye(s) every 12 hours, or as directed by your veterinarian. The ointment may be placed directly on the cornea or into the conjunctival sac.

Warnings, side effects and potential drug interactions:

  • The safety of Optimmune has not been determined in cases of preexisting viral or fungal ocular infections. Use of the product should be delayed until the fungal/viral ocular infection has been successfully treated.

  • The safety of Optimmune in puppies, pregnant females, or dogs used for breeding has not been determined.

  • On rare occasions, Optimmune use may be associated with local irritation such as redness around the eye, eyelid spasm, and excessive rubbing. Inflammation is common in the eyes of dogs with KCS, so it may be difficult to determine whether this local irritation constitutes a hypersensitivity to Optimmune or due to the underlying disease. If irritation persists beyond seven days, hypersensitivity to a component of Optimmune should be suspected and therapeutic options reassessed.

  • In cases refractory to cyclosporine, the diagnosis should be re-evaluated and a different course of therapy considered.
