Product contains:
Meloxicam 1.5mg/mL
Product indications:
Metacam® is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory (NSAID) used to control pain and inflammation associated with osteoarthritis in dogs.
Dosage and administration:
Metacam is highly palatable and most dogs will accept the honey-flavored liquid. It may be given via a dropper or syringe into the dog's mouth or mixed with food.
Shake the bottle well before use. Give 0.09 mg/lb (0.2mg/kg) as a single dose on the first day of treatment only, and then 0.045mg/lb (0.1mg/kg) once every 24 hours thereafter as maintenance therapy, or as otherwise directed by your veterinarian.
Warnings, side effects & potential drug interactions:
Metacam should not be used with dogs displaying a known hypersensitivity to meloxicam.
Metacam should not be administered to pregnant or lactating animals.
Safe use of Metacam has not been established in dogs under six months of age, or pregnant or lactating animals.
Generally, NSAIDs can be associated with gastrointestinal, kidney and liver toxicity. Animals at greatest risk are those with kidney, heart or liver disease, or those which are dehydrated. The most commonly reported reactions are vomiting and diarrhea, occasionally bloody. Additional adverse reactions seen in association with Metacam use include: decreased appetite, lethargy, depression, liver or kidney damage and itching of the skin. In rare situations, death has been reported.
It is not recommended to give Metacam in conjunction with any drugs which may exacerbate toxicity, such as corticosteroids, other NSAIDs or any drugs known to be toxic to kidneys.
Metacam is not recommended for use in dogs with bleeding disorders. Care should be taken if administering in conjunction with other drugs which are highly protein-bound or metabolized through the liver, as this may increase the availability of the drug and cause adverse effects. If any signs of toxicity occur, stop treatment and consult your veterinarian for treatment advice.
